Weekly Classes

My writing classes are a hybrid of memoir and creative writing. Using an intuitive process, I invite students to summon characters, places, events, sensory memories, and stories that have been waiting to be written about.

Students may arrive with an idea they want to pursue, or they may come to discover the themes and content they want to write about. They find opportunities to open to the heart of their writing in a secure environment that promotes deep personal exploration and expression.

 The Design

These classes are for you:

  • If you want to free your creativity, stimulate your memories, and open pathways to a deep and meditative writing process.

  • If you’re looking for a way to energize your writing, hone your craft, engage in writing practice, and give and take productive feedback.

  • If you’d like to write for the sake of writing, in the stimulating company of students from varied backgrounds, work, and life experience.

 The Approach

In weekly classes, I introduce an idea through a provocative piece of writing or another inspiring source. We may concentrate on a point about craft; such as voice, tense, tone, or another aspect of writing. Group discussion follows, and together we develop prompts, a bouquet of ideas that contributes to our writing. From there, I provide an exercise to focus a writing period. After the writing time, each student has a chance to read, although it is not required. Students listen to one another’s work and respond with questions or comments about each individual’s work in a kind and productive way.
